J.F. Moran Company
was formed in 1937 by Mr. James Moran. Having served the industry for
some 12 odd years, he decided to venture out on his own. The company primarily
served the international traders of Rhode Island who, at the time, utilized
ocean freight service to carry their imported products through a fairly
active Port of Providence.
The company made
steady, conservative growth until the first of the Black family joined
the company in 1962. For the first time, a modest marketing and sales
program was formulated and aggressively implemented.
About this time
a steamship agency division was created and added to the corporate structure.
As time passed this business flourished. Alongside Customs Brokerage
came the inclusion of Foreign Freight Forwarding which catered to the
numerous and active manufacturing businesses in Rhode Island and Southern
New England.
Slowly and inexorably,
throughout the nation, international commerce shifted from an exporting
economy to importing. J.F. Moran was among the first in the region to
seek out less expensive methods of transporting the product to and from
foreign origins. The sourcing history of offshore procurement began
with Japan and followed with Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand, India,
Mainland China and obviously Europe.
The concept of consolidated
shipments rose to the surface and Moran pioneered this method of shipping
by forming collaborative arrangements with agent/forwarders in all of
the countries mentioned above and the other major markets of the world.
These changes in
international trade spurred the global growth of the J.F. Moran Company
and worldwide representation. Eventually, the Black family purchased
the business from the survivors of the original owners. Mr. William
P. Black is now principal owner and chairman of the J.F. Moran Company
and the Black family's business philosophy continues to be carried on
today by the next generation.
With a conscientiousness
of purpose and dedication to matters both routine and critical, Moran
has become a national company with ten offices coast to coast.
Moran is one of
only a handful of service companies in the United States offering professional
assistance on Customs Brokerage, Foreign Freight Forwarding, and a wholly
owned trucking fleet in the New England area. Moran has 25 licensed
brokers and management personnel having a combined service of 18 years
with U.S. Customs.
Today the intelligent
business person will come to terms with the nature of a global economy
by taking advantage of the business opportunities available in this
area. It would be wise to look into the importance of the role assumed
by the Customs Broker or Foreign Freight Forwarder in an international
transaction. It would be even further prudent to contact J.F. Moran.
